The UW Department of Pathology offers 4 week in-person observerships during the summer months to external medical school graduates. We do not currently offer remote/virtual observerships. Summer observers will rotate through anatomic pathology (i.e. 1 week in surgical pathology and 1 week in autopsy pathology) as well as clinical pathology (i.e. 1 week in transfusion medicine and 1 week in CP Core). They will have the opportunity to attend our departmental conferences and didactics, get to know our residents, fellows, and attendings, and explore the city of Madison. In order to help them better integrate into our department and make the most of the educational experience, all observers will be assigned a faculty mentor. The usual schedule is 8am-5pm Monday through Friday and all rotations occur at the University of Wisconsin Hospital.
Note that 2024 observership positions have all been filled. We offer 2 month-long observership options in 2025:
2025 Observership Dates
Tuesday, May 27 2025 – Friday, June 20 2025 (*note that Monday May 26 is a holiday)
Monday, July 7 2025 – Friday, August 1 2025
Interested applicants should upload a copy of their CV (including USMLE Step scores, if available) by March 1st of the intended academic year of rotation. If one of the two month-long time spans is particularly desired, please indicate this preference on the application form. All applications will be reviewed and the selected applicants notified by March 15th. Please note that space limitations may preclude all applicants being offered an observership slot. Selected applicants will be put in contact with the UW Hospital VMedical Staff Affairs (MSA) Office who will work with applicants to obtain necessary vaccination records, etc. Applicants will also be provided with links to information regarding transportation and housing options.
